Philippines Travel Guide Janiuay Church Ruins. The ruins of the Neoclassic Church of Janiuay stands overshadowing the newer one. It is also once the longest church in Panay island but was destroyed by the Japanese imperial forces during World War 2. It was built between 1830 to 1871. The parish did some make over to the ruins converting it grounds and vicinity into a promenade garden. I noticed immediately the flowery garden righter after we alighted the jeepney. There’s a bronze statue outside the garden facing the main road. What is left indicates that the church was conceived as a Neoclassical structure with engaged columns and pilasters of coral stone alternating with clean brick walls ornamented by arched opening.
